Traffic Safety on Campus

Navigating Campus Safely

Every day, thousands of motorists, including buses and construction vehicles, operate within the university community. At the same time, hundreds of pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters, and skateboarders move throughout campus.

In recent years, increased traffic and pedestrian congestion, partly due to construction and road closures, has made awareness of safety rules more important than ever. Understanding your rights and responsibilities as a pedestrian, cyclist, or motorist helps keep everyone safe.

Safety Tips for Motorists

• Drive at safe speeds while on campus
• Always wear your seatbelt
• Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks
• Be alert for individuals crossing outside of marked crosswalks or acting unpredictably
• Pay extra attention near buses unloading passengers; pedestrians often cross in front of buses

Safety Tips for Cyclists

• Ride in streets or paths clearly marked as bike lanes
• On shared paths, ride slowly and yield the right of way to pedestrians
• Use a headlight and tail light when traveling during hours of darkness
• Wear bright and/or reflective clothing for visibility
• Avoid wearing headphones, which can block important sounds and increase risk
Register your bicycle with the UHD Police Department to help prevent theft and assist in recovery if it is lost or stolen

Safety Tips for Pedestrians, Skateboarders, and Scooters

• Be alert and use crosswalks whenever possible
• Skateboards, hoverboards, and scooters are regulated under Texas traffic laws and are not permitted on roadways
• Wear bright or reflective clothing for visibility, day and night

By paying attention to these tips, you help keep our campus safe for everyone. Together, we can reduce accidents and ensure a safer environment for all members of the university community.
