The endowment was created by James E. Stafford, using funds he had given over time to the CIS/AITP scholarship fund, along with matching gifts from his employer, Halliburton Inc.
Stafford’s story is part of the donor intent: after an Air Force career and decades in industry, he returned to school, earned a B.S. in CIS from UHD in 1990, and believed the degree helped him re-enter the workforce—making this award a way to recognize outstanding CIS graduates.
Criteria :
The annual distributed income is used to award:
  • A Computer Information Systems student with:
    • the highest overall GPA and
    • the highest CIS GPA, as selected by CIS faculty.
  • The recipient must be graduating or have graduated with honors:
    • Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude.
  • The award is named:
    • “Stafford Outstanding CIS Graduate Award.”
  • The recipient’s name is added to a College of Business plaque.
  • One award is given annually by the College of Business.
Contact person: Dr. Islam, Anisul IslamA@uhd.edu

The scholarship is funded by Texas CPAs who contribute $10 annually through their license renewal and helps accounting students with tuition, books, and other higher education costs for becoming a CPA.
Current Requirements (from TSBPA - see attached):

  • Texas resident enrolled at a participating Texas institution
  • Filed an Application of Intent with TSBPA to take the CPA exam
  • No more than 30 hours remaining to meet CPA exam education requirements
  • Demonstrate financial need through FAFSA

Haven’t already been approved for or taken the CPA exam

Important Update: According to TXCPA (also attached), SB 951/HB 2504 will expand the program to make funds available to accounting students who have completed at least 15 hours of upper-level accounting coursework. This will allow third and fourth-year accounting students to become eligible, which should increase the number of students who become licensed CPAs.

Application Process: Students submit their Application of Intent to TSBPA, complete FAFSA, then submit the scholarship application to the accounting program director by the school’s deadline (UHD accepts applications as long as there is any undistributed funds left).

Award Amount: Usually $1,500 minimum per semester, $7,500 maximum lifetime award.

Marilyn Dement would be the best person for further information about the current process.
