Job Summary

The Medical Assistant provides administrative and clinical support to patients as delegated by health care providers in the Student Health Center.

Duties

  • Provides support to the Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse with emergency and non-emergency clinical procedures and first aid as needed. Assists with general medical care, obtain vital signs and report the patient's condition to the provider.
  • Provides room for patients, schedules patient appointments, addresses telephone calls, and performs other clerical office duties as assigned.
  • Performs EKG, and other office procedures as directed by the delegating provider. Monitors health center equipment in exam/treatment rooms and laboratory area. Maintains clinic inventory and restock as needed. Communicates with the health center Nurse Practitioner on relevant patient concerns, emergencies or follow up. Assists with medical exams procedures.
  • Educates patients on use of necessary medical equipment. Administers appropriate medication as delegated by ordering provider.
  • Prepared treatment rooms or examinations
  • Performs simple POC laboratory procedures including phlebotomy and collection of other specimens. Prepare specimen for transfer to an offsite lab. Records and maintains lab log and document process in EMR. Administers appropriate immunization per CDC guidelines and/or provider order.
  • Transmits patient EMR to collaborative provider/facility. Follows up on patients regarding provider's treatment plan or referral.
  • Documents all correspondence in EMR.
  • Responsible for billing and collecting for all services provided pursuant to its internal policies and procedures.

Marginal Duties

  • Participates in health center quality assurance projects, as well as UH special events and health fairs.
  • Communicates with the health center Nurse Practitioner on relevant patient concerns, emergencies or follow up.
  • Serves as clinic liaison who will participate on UHD committees and attend student/faculty/staff orientations and other meetings as requested.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of related job experience

License/Certification:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR Certificate of completion of a Medical Assistant training program.
