Job Summary
The Executive Director of Communications provides strategic direction and support to expand positive media coverage, develop and build media relationships, and further overall university communication. This leader directs the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive, multi-faceted communication program.
Duties
- Provides direction and supervision to communication department staff managing internal and external communications, photography and videography
- Develops the annual goals and metrics for evaluating the success of projects, initiatives, and efforts of team members in accordance with the institution's strategic plan and goals
- Assesses and evaluates communication and media efforts. Monitors publications, websites, and initiatives to ensure promotion of university priorities
- Serves as a key advisor to the President on UHD's crisis management and emergency management team. Provides guidance and advice to the President and senior administration on significant public relations issues
- Presents the university to editorial boards, management or media contacts to increase media exposure.
- Writes a variety of communications materials for the University including press releases, feature articles and executive communications
- Serves as primary point of contact for media, linking faculty experts with media sources to promote the university

Qualifications
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, marketing, management or a related field
Required Experience:
- Minimum of ten (10) years of related job experience
License/Certification:
- Must maintain a valid, current driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Two (2) years of higher education experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of social media platforms and of media relations protocols
Skills:
- Strong writing, editing, and communications skills; proficiency in using and learning computer applications, including Microsoft Excel
- Candidates must have strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Abilities:
- Ability to research, interview, and write editorial content using associated press style
- Ability to present the university to editorial boards, management, or media contacts to increase media exposure
- Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community

Financial Administration

- Directs administration of the organizational unit's budget to ensure effective utilization of financial resources and compliance with federal, State, and university policies and procedures.
- Approves disbursement of funds consistent with the organizational unit's budget.
- Monitors status of organizational unit's budget, and directs the resolution of deficiencies and/or discrepancies.
Organizational Engagement
- Positively represents organizational unit to internal and external constituents in support of the organizational unit's efforts and in recognition of its accomplishments.
- Coordinates with other university administrators to collaborate endeavors across organizational units.
- Builds rapport with external constituents to advance the organizational unit's goals and objectives and engage the community with the university's efforts to address the needs and advance the development of the region.
- Competently responds to audits and requests from governmental entities and UH-System on behalf of the organizational unit.
