Former Foster Preference

In compliance with Texas Code Chapter 672, the University of Houston–Downtown is provides a preference in employment to eligible applicants who were once foster children who meet minimum qualifications and any special qualifications for the position to which they apply. The required preferences do not compel the university to appoint a former foster; however, they do require that those who meet the former foster preference eligibility be appointed when their application assessment, combined with the former foster's preference, is equal to, or higher than that of a non-eligible applicant.

Eligible applicants receive this preference when they meet both following criteria:

  • Were under Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) permanent managing conservatorship on the day before their 18th birthday
  • Are 25 years of age or younger at the time of application

The preference does not require the university to hire an applicant but does require appropriate consideration consistent with state law. For more details regarding the Employment Preference for Former Foster Children, please contact our liaison in Human Resources at careers@uhd.edu.
