Ms. Akins joined the faculty at UHD in 2023 as a Lecturer. Her areas of interest include addressing and assessing the communication practices in criminal justice systems, specifically as they relate to wrongful convictions. She has been teaching criminal justice courses since 2004, having previously taught at New Mexico State University and University of Houston-Victoria. Prior to teaching, Ms. Akins worked in the non-profit sector in child abuse prevention and sexual assault/interpersonal violence prevention.
