Safety Training
Training and education are primary means of achieving a safe and healthy working and learning environment. The Environmental Health and Safety Office offers a wide variety of safety training courses to Faculty, Staff, Students and Visitors.
UHD Employees are required to take one or more safety training courses depending upon the type of work they perform. The EHS Office will provide guidance for supervisors and their workers to identify common employee training requirements and recommended courses. The supervisor must identify other training needs that is required to assist employees to perform their job safely.

Informs about potential hazards associated with the presence of asbestos containing material (ACM) in properties owned or maintained by the University and to prevent accidental exposure.
Required for Facilities Management and Service staff involved in building maintenance activities.
Reviews agronomical lifting techniques to ensure occupational injury reduction and improve overall work quality.
Reviews and identifies workers who are at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens as well as identifies key aspects of the Exposure Control Plan.
Required for UHD personnel including faculty, staff, students, and visitors working with or around potential bloodborne pathogens.
Reviews the do's and don'ts's of use, handling, and storage of compressed gases.
Required for Laboratory personnel that use compressed gas cylinders as part of lab activities and Facilities Management personnel that may use compressed gas cylinders in their job duties.
Identifies the hazards associated with confined spaces and proper protocols for breaking the plane of entry into a confined space,
Reviews the requirements of fall protection and provides hands on training with fall protection equipment.
Overview of general safety guidelines and EHS role in the University's safety program.
Reviews the Right-to-Know Act and general recognition of chemical hazards.
Required for all faculty, staff and student employees at UHD who may encounter potentially hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
Provides review of personal protection from injury due to unexpected energization, startup, or release of stored energy for persons working in, on, or around equipment or machinery when it is being maintained, operated, repaired, or serviced.
Reviews federal regulations for handling and storage of hazardous materials.
Provides procedures for reporting injuries and near misses.
Provide faculty, staff, and students a general review of lab safety measures.
Required for all personnel that will work in a laboratory environment and with any potential exposure to biological, chemical or radiation hazards. The course covers the basic PPE requirements and operating procedures that are expected in University laboratories. All Visiting Researchers and Interns at UHD laboratories must complete this course before starting work in the laboratory.
Review of selection and use of ladders for working safely at heights.
Provides overview of selection, proper care, and usage of personal protective equipment.
Provides general safety techniques for operating hand and power tools.
Reviews hazards waste regulations, classifications, and disposal protocols.
Overview of general event safety topics, including brief introduction of food, decoration, and fire safety.
Provides response protocols for spill incidents to avoid oil products from reaching navigable waters.
Reviews general practices to avoid injuries from slips, trips, and falls.
