About CLS Community Partners' Internships

In an effort to support our mission to engage students and faculty with community minded initiatives, CLS partners with entities that serve Latino communities or provide services and programs for underserved populations. UHD students will find in these collaborations opportunities to participate in internships and volunteer work that exposes them to real-world work environments. The program is designed to foster a student's professional skillset, academic engagement, sense of purpose and personal growth.


Current Internships / Volunteer Work

UHD The Dateline Student’s Newspaper 
Internship Citeria:
The Dateline (TD) is looking for interns to work remotely in the areas described below. Each internship covers a semester’s term. To successfully complete an internship:

  • Candidate must comply with work, rules and regulations set forth by TD staff.
  • Candidate must complete the number of hours or tasks as agreed to with TD staff.
  • Published work with TD will have the participant’s name as author or co-author.
  • Internships can be renewed for future semesters under the discretion of TD.
  • Full semester commitment.
  • Compensation available.

Positions available:
Section Editors: Shape TD news, culture, features, and opinion sections.
Writers: Report on stories that matter to the UHD community.
Illustrators: Create original art, cartoons, and visual pieces for our print and digital editions.
Social Media Manager (Deadline September 8th): Take charge of TD online presence across Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and more.

Center for Latino Studies Work-Study (filled
The Center for Latino Studies each cycle identifies an enthusiastic Work-Study funded student to serve as the Center Office Assistant. The candidate will serve as host, direct calls, create, receive and stock supply orders, and run the day-to-day operation of the Center. In addition, the ideal candidate will provide a student-view in collaboration with Center Directors to create and organize events and update social media content to promote the Center’s mission.

Center for Latino Studies Internships
Internship Citeria:
Each internship covers a semester’s term. To successfully complete an internship:

  • Candidate must comply with work, rules and regulations as set forth by CLS.
  • The usual engagement calls for 4 hr. / week, both remote and on-site, but other arrangements can be worked out.
  • CLS will conduct an end of engagement evaluation to assert completion of Internship.
  • Internships can be renewed for future semesters under the discretion of CLS.
  • Upon successful completion of the Internship CLS will award the participant $300

Positions available:
Podcast / Video and Media Content Editor (1 intern)
CLS is actively seeking a skilled and creative Podcast / Video Content and Media intern to join our team. As a Podcast / Video and Media Content Editor intern you will play a pivotal role in shaping the many initiatives created by the Center by bringing stories and experiences to life through engaging visual and audio content. Your expertise in editing, keen eye for detail, and ability to craft compelling stories will contribute to the organization's mission of fostering confidence, leadership, and self-expression. You will support in editing our Historias del Centro Podcast and creating visuals for posting in our social media. This role not only offers the opportunity to refine and showcase your editing prowess but also to make a meaningful impact on a diverse and vibrant community.

HHL Language Lab Tutor 
Positions available:
Beginner’s Spanish Tutor (multiple - volunteer)
The HHL Language Lab (930N) is looking for several volunteers to serve as Spanish tutors for Beginner’s Spanish. Tutoring can be offered as little as 1 hour per week through Zoom. Your availability will be uploaded into our new Navigate system, and first year Spanish students will see a list of available tutors / times to choose from. You do not need to be physically present at UHD, and you decide what day(s) / time(s) work for you (i.e. evenings, Saturday, anytime you decide). You can opt out of a particular appointment by notifying me a week in advance. This is a great opportunity to practice your teaching skills. The system will notify you if anyone has signed for your session. Participants will be mentioned in any future reference as having experience tutoring / teaching. I will set up a meeting for orientation.

UHD Bilingual e-Library Internships 
The UHD E-Bilingual Library is committed to developing literacy skills through our extensive collection of free bilingual e-books. Carefully created by UHD students, children, and families, these books are designed to guide readers on a captivating journey into language and imagination. Our mission is to transform lives, one page at a time, by providing accessible and enriching reading resources that celebrate cultural diversity and foster a lifelong love of learning.

Internship Citeria:

  • Must be a current UHD student
  • Proficient in Spanish & English (reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills)
  • The area of study should match the fields that each position is requesting
  • Payment though work-study program

Positions available:

Reading Tutors (multiple)

The UHD Bilingual e-Library project seeks to hire several work-study students to teach literacy and technology skills to families, preparing them for the job market and supporting Houston's economic growth, which is linked to increasing community literacy. Reading Tutors will use the UHD Bilingual e-Library, adopt community members, and teach them literacy and technology skills.

Ribbon Magazine Internships 
Ribbon Magazine comments on the intersection of femininity, feminism, current affairs and pop-culture. Articles cover a wide range of disciplines and interest and are meant as a shared space of open dialogue and celebration of the female self.

Internship Citeria:

  • Candidate must comply with work, rules and regulations set forth by RM staff.
  • Candidate must complete the number of hours or tasks as agreed to with RM staff.
  • Published work with RM will have the participant’s name as author or co-author.
  • Internships can be renewed for future semesters under the discretion of RM.
  • Full semester commitment.
  • No compensation – guest writer.
  • Great for building your professional portfolio.

Contributing Writer (multiple)
Ribbon Magazine is looking for Writing Interns to contribute to our pop culture publication! From bold opinion pieces and political takes to lifestyle stories, exclusive interviews and reviews—we cover it all (including a whole section for our Swifties). We’re looking for curious, outspoken writers ready to spark conversations, challenge norms, and celebrate the complexity of girlhood. Build your portfolio and grow with us at Ribbon!  

Graphic Designer
Ribbon Magazine is looking for a Graphic Design Intern to help bring our pop culture publication to life! From creating fun memes and cute social graphics to designing visuals that promote our articles, you’ll play a key role in shaping how our content connects with readers. We’re looking for a creative mind with Canva experience, ready to experiment, have fun, and build a strong portfolio along the way. A small stipend will be provided upon completion!

Alley Theatre Internships 
Alley Theatre is one of the largest U.S. professional nonprofit theatres outside of New York City. It is also one of the oldest resident theatre companies in the country. The Alley has been awarded the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, the Pulitzer Prize for one of its premiers, and the Texas Medal of Arts Award.

Internship Criteria:
Alley Theatre is looking for interns to translate into Spanish plays produced in Season 79. To successfully complete an internship:

  • Candidate must be available to work remotely for 40-50 hours during the translation period and will report to the Manager of Emerging Audiences.
  • Candidate must attend, in person, one Interpreter rehearsal and one simultaneous translation performance.
  • Candidate has potential to receive translation credit on materials, pending production needs and final review.
  • Internships can be renewed for future semesters under the discretion of Manager of Emerging Audiences.
  • Spring semester commitment.
