As the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) continues to innovate and expand, the university is offering two new degree programs, in addition to now offering its MBA program completely online.
Beginning fall 2025, courses will be offered for the B.S. in Cybersecurity and the B.A. in Translation degree programs. “UHD’s administration and excellent faculty are dedicated to providing the Houston region with top-notch educational experiences alongside workforce development opportunities,” said Dr. Deborah E. Bordelon, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
“All three degree offerings are about empowering students to improve the socioeconomic trajectories of their lives, as well as those of their families, to better our communities and our children’s futures,” added Dr. Bordelon.
The B.A. in Translation will empower students with the necessary linguistic and critical thinking skills, tools, and knowledge to address issues of language access among Houston’s Spanish speaking population, especially in the areas of law and medicine. This degree program will provide students with sufficient theoretical concepts and required practical experience to use their linguistic competencies, technological tools, writing and reading skills, and intercultural knowledge to prepare language translations in the medical and legal professions, as well as related fields, such as writing/editing and interpreting. The program provides a foundation in translation techniques, vocabulary strategies, and hands-on training.
The B.S. in Cybersecurity offers an in-demand program that delivers marketable, technology-oriented skills. It is designed for students with a high school diploma as well as community college graduates, who hold an interest in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, data science, math, and management information systems. The degree program meets the requirements of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Cybersecurity Curricula as well as the accreditation requirements of the Associated Board for Engineering and Technology. The courses cover computer security, network security, computer network architecture, operating systems, and cryptography.
“According to the Texas Workforce Commission, local employment of information security analysts is projected to grow by 39% during the 2020s,” said Dr. Bordelon. “Texas (and Houston in particular) is among the hottest markets for cybersecurity workers.”
Meeting the needs of Houston’s business community, UHD’s Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB) kicked off its online MBA this summer. “Offering the MBA online is in line with our history of flexibility and meeting students where their needs are,” said MDCOB Dean Jonathan Davis. “The online MBA includes the same powerful features of our in-person MBA, such as the same faculty, an industry leader co-teaching each class, and 8-week terms in the evenings. Plus, our online MBA students have the option to take any MBA class in person. We’re proud of this new degree program, and it remains among the most affordable MBAs in the state of Texas.”
