Top Six Reasons to Become a Bilingual Educator at UHD
- TEXAS STUDENTS NEED YOU! School districts across Texas need bilingual certified educators. Ninety-four percent
of school districts in Texas have identified Emergent Bilinguals (EBs). Ninety percent
of those EBs speak Spanish as their native language.
 - YOU WILL LEARN FROM TOP FACULTY. The faculty in the Department of Urban Education are committed to supporting future
bilingual educators to learn from practice, theory and research in the classroom.
Additionally, UE faculty regularly collaborate with local school districts to stay
informed on current issues, are involved in creation and revision of certification
exams, and provide support for exam preparation.
 - THREE STRATEGIC LOCATIONS. Teacher candidates have the flexibility to complete their program during the day
or evening at any of three UHD locations: Kingwood , Northwest and Downtown.
 - SMALL CLASS SIZES. The average class size in the Department is less than 20 students. Teacher candidates
receive the attention and support needed to succeed.
 - YOU WILL BUILD AN ADVOCACY NETWORK. Teacher candidates develop a knowledge base that allows them to advocate for bilingualism,
biliteracy and interculturalism, starting with our active chapter of BESO, the national
                              bilingual preservice teacher organization.
 - TARGETED HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE. Our program places teacher candidates at local district campuses in bilingual/dual language settings for more than twice the state required hours. This affords teacher candidates more opportunity to experience the classroom and engage with students and teachers as they hone their skill set.
