Organization Description

UHD Sports & Fitness is a vital and integral part of student life on campus. Sports & Fitness provides the university community with programs that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health-promoting, physical activities conducive to wellness and personal development. Sports & Fitness supports the mission of UHD by seeking to create a climate that motivates members to embrace a healthy lifestyle that can enhance their academic studies, build friendships and social skills, develop leadership qualities, and cultivate a sense of ownership and belonging to the university.

The 74,000-square-foot Wellness and Success Center includes three courts equipped for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball. Additionally, there are three multipurpose studios designed for aerobics, dance, and martial arts, along with state-of-the-art weight equipment and cardiovascular units, including treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes.

In addition to group exercise classes, personal training, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, health workshops, and certifications, the Sports & Fitness program also offers intramural sports and club sports programs. Evaluations and assessments are conducted to ensure compliance with SACS and university standards.

An internship with Sports & Fitness provides students with hands-on experience in programming, facilitating, assessing, and evaluating health, wellness, and sports initiatives within a vibrant university environment. These transferable skills will help interns stand out among other applicants seeking positions in Campus Recreation.

Description of Internship

An intern will work with the Associate Director, the Fitness Coordinator, the Sports Coordinator, or the eSports Coordinator within the Department of Sports & Fitness.

Fitness Intern

The Fitness Intern is responsible for supporting, the structure, direction, and services of fitness programs. Specifically, this includes assisting with the coordination/facilitation of all fitness activities, marketing efforts, data entry/compilation, and office assignments for fitness programs.

The Fitness Intern will assist in coordinating fitness classes, monthly healthy workshops, and certification programs. Responsibilities will include marketing and promoting events, setting up activities, facilitating sessions, and evaluating programs. The intern will propose and research wellness topics, set up promotional displays, and engage with the university community.

Additionally, interns will participate in the health fair committee and various committees of interest allowing them to engage and work with others on health and wellness initiatives. Finally, interns will be tasked to research and propose programming for upcoming semesters, which will involve reaching out and networking with outside health and wellness organizations for potential collaboration with the university.

Sports Intern

The Sports Intern will support the structure, direction, services, and programs related to Sports & Fitness. This includes assisting with the coordination/facilitation of all sports activities, marketing efforts, data entry/compilation, and office assignments relevant to sports programs.

A sports intern will help facilitate intramural and club sports programs, conduct monthly club meetings, and officiate events. Responsibilities will involve marketing, promoting activities, event setup, facilitation, and program evaluations. Interns will also assist with the sports club council and participate in various committees, allowing them to engage and collaborate with others in recreational sports initiatives.

Additionally, interns will be tasked to research and propose programming for upcoming semesters including networking with external recreational sports organizations to establish collaborations with the university.

eSports Intern

The eSports Intern is responsible for many tasks including daily operations, weekly inventory marketing and promotion of the department, department equipment checks, and other administrative duties.

An eSports intern will help to facilitate programs, interact with a diverse student population, remain up to date with eSports trends, consoles, and games, and lead facility tours. Interns will also help plan major tournaments, oversee club team processes, and establish collaborations with student organizations.

 

Interns will also be able to participate in research projects.

Criteria for Interns
To qualify as an intern, applicants must:

  • Maintain good academic standing.
  • Be enrolled in a higher education curriculum that focuses on health, wellness, or sports studies.
  • Show a genuine interest in health, wellness, or sports programming.
  • Be professional and enthusiastic about collaborating with others.
  • Be available during operating hours (Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM; note that sports intern hours may vary).
  • Possess proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Compensation
Interns will earn 160-320 hours over a 15-week semester, which can be applied toward fulfilling an academic requirement.
