Organization Description
History of Agency: Phoenix House has provided addiction treatment and prevention services in Texas since 1995. Each year, we help thousands of men, women, and adolescents overcome drug and alcohol addiction and find recovery in order to lead productive drug-free lives. We are committed to protecting and supporting individuals, families, and communities affected by substance use disorders and dependency. Our continuum of care recognizes the long-term nature of recovery and provides a wide range of services—from prevention, early intervention, and treatment to continuing care and recovery support. In addition to our own programs, Phoenix House of Texas often collaborates with community organizations that offer specialized services. Our programs throughout Texas serve more than 15,000 adults and teenagers each year. Using innovative, evidence-based treatment methods, we address each patient’s needs with respect and compassion.

Description of Internship
**Dependent on what track or program the student is working towards and/or the specific academic focus**

Treatment (Clinical)- Adolescent Outpatient or Adult Outpatient Services:
Interns will have the opportunity to attend and observe intake assessments, observing and participating in group/individual/family counseling and drug testing/screenings, and becoming familiarized with the Phoenix House curriculum. Once the student becomes more comfortable with the material and duties, they will then begin hosting the sessions, as well as conducting assessments and screenings.

Prevention Services:
Interns will work closely with Prevention specialists in preparing consent forms, setting up services at local schools and community centers, implementing evidenced-based education to youth in school and community settings, scoring pre & post test, and providing positive alternatives throughout the community.

Criteria for Interns

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Complete a mandatory drug test
  • Pass the Criminal Background Check through Phoenix House
  • If the intern chooses to follow the Prevention program track, they must pass a Background Check at the local schools of attendance (If they do not pass a background check in the schools, the Prevention Supervisor will assign other duties during internship)
  • Must have basic customer service and computer skills knowledge
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • All Social Sciences are welcome; although it is dependent upon an individual basis and professor approval of the following supervision - (An LPC or LCDC will be signing for supervision hours/credits - dependent upon professor preference)
