- The College of Public Service Advising Center won First Place and a $100 gift card in the 2017 Homecoming Decorating Contest. 

- Cynthia Hartman was elected Secretary for UHD Staff Council. 

- Our Center for Public Service and Community Research connected 12 student volunteers to serve as interpreters at Mayor Turner’s Community Meeting at Marshall Middle School on Thursday, November 2nd. 

- Nina Barbieri and Rebecca Pfeffer presented a session on “The Importance of Multicultural Pedagogy in Criminal Justice Education” at the Men of Color Greater Houston Area Collegiate Symposium.

- Matt Fugate and Nina Barbieri presented a session on “Who Looks Like Me? The Need for More Men of Color at the Front of the Classroom” at the Men of Color Greater Houston Area Collegiate Symposium. 

- Christal Burnett represented the college at the Compact for Faculty Diversity conference where she met with outstanding doctoral candidates and shared the opportunities for new faculty in our programs. 

- Matt Fugate, Nina Barbieri, and representatives from our student organizations in Criminal Justice and Urban Education shared two days of STEM learning experiences with the young men in the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program. 

- Beverly Alford has been invited by the Texas Education Agency to serve as one of the Early Childhood faculty experts who will assist in drafting the state’s new PK-3 certification. 

-  Bernardo Pohl and Christal Burnett represented the Urban Education program at the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education. 

- Urban Education student, Ashley Ericson attended the Kappa Delta Pi conference in Pittsburgh to accept an award for the UHD chapter and gain knowledge about further developing our chapter. 

- Ashley Blackburn, Maria Bhattacharjee, Angie Goins, Judith Harris, Laura Mitchell, and Stephen Wernet participated in the 2nd Annual Symposium of University Supported Scholarship and Creativity.  

- Nina Barbieri, Christal Burnett, Jonathan Chism, Matt Fugate, Dawn McCarty, Rebecca Pfeffer, Leigh Van Horn, Steven Villano, and Jerry Wallace attended the Fifth Ward Program Luncheon and discussed how best to support the growing number of young men from the program who are entering UHD. 

- Ashley Blackburn was awarded the College of Public Service CARES Award for her student Maria Lecuna. The two of them will present “Don’t let me be misunderstood: Awareness Gap of a Court Interpreter’s Role – a Contributing Factor to Vicarious Trauma” at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences conference. 

- Matt Fugate and Krista Gehring will be the inaugural faculty members of the College of Public Service to participate in the UHD Grant Academy in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

- Heather Goltz, Beth Sanders, and Clete Snell’s proposals to engage students in the Gator Professionals Aspiring to Succeed (GPAS) Mentor-Employer Program have been chosen by the committee. Orientation took place on November 3rd. 

- Beth Gilmore’s papers, “Blue views: A race-based analysis of police officer responses to recent high profile cases,” and “Texas-tough or progressive: A examination of reform bills in the Texas legislature,” were accepted for presentation at the American Society of Criminology Conference. In the first paper, Beth is partnering with a student, James Holt and in the second paper, with a student, Brandon Andrews, and fellow faculty member, Kevin Buckler.  

- Heather Goltz’s papers, “Hidden in plain site: A case study” and “Sexual behaviors associated with PAP,” have been accepted for presentation at the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality conference. 

- Franklin Allaire’s paper, “Longitudinal study on teacher identity development with students in an urban university education program,” has been accepted for presentation at the Hawaii International Conference on Education. 

- Jace Valcore’s paper, “Blue lines and rainbow flags: Climates of inclusion and exclusion in LGBTQ policing,” has been accepted for presentation at the American Society of Criminology Conference. 

- Shanaz Savani’s paper, “Suicide in Central Asia: Risk and protective factors and interventions,” was accepted for presentation at the Society for Social Work and Research conference.  

- Yu-Han Hung’s papers, “Exploration of imaginative engagement of controversial public issues,” and “Teacher as stranger: Possibility of imaginative engagement and curriculum and instruction,” have been accepted for presentation at the College and University Faculty Assembly and the International Assembly at the National Council of Social Studies Annual Conference.

- Krista Gehring’s paper, “Rethinking teaching criminology: A theme-based approach,” was accepted for presentation at the American Society of Criminology. 

- Diane Miller’s paper, “A state affiliate’s quest to bolster teacher voice: Connecting with state-level politicians and curriculum directors,” was accepted for presentation at the National Council of Teachers of English conference. 

- Kevin Buckler’s papers, “Rethinking teaching criminology: A theme-based approach,” “Blue views: A race-based analysis of police officer responses to recent high profile cases,” and “Texas – tough or progressive: An examination of reform bills in the Texas legislature,” were accepted for presentation at the American Society of Criminology conference. 

- Jacqueline Sack’s paper, “Developing visualization in elementary classrooms,” was accepted for presentation at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference. 

- Hsiao-Ming Wang received an invitation from the Shanghai Police College to present his paper, “Finance crime: Environmental criminology and crime prevention.” 

- Bernardo Pohl’s paper, “Supporting social studies research,” was accepted for presentation at the Texas Council of Social Studies conference. 

- Krista Gehring’s workshop, “Needs and pretrial outcomes: A gender-informed approach for men and women defendants,” has been accepted by the Program Committee for the American Probation and Parole Association’s Winter Training Institute. 

- Maria Bhattacharjee’s paper, “The use of an E-bilingual library to develop literacy skills in young children,” was accepted for presentation at the Texas Association for Bilingual Education conference.  

- Christal Burnett received the Regional Chapter Award for the Omega Phi chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education! She was nominated for this award by our students, Mayra Santos and Ashley Ericson, members and officers of the organization. 

- Ash Tiwari received the Scholarly Innovation Award for his proposal “Measuring UHD Faculty Attitudes Toward Disability: Willingness to Accommodate and Adopt Universal Design Principles.” 

Heather Goltz received the Scholarly Innovation Award for her proposal to attend and make two presentations at the 2017 Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. 

Franklin Allaire received the Scholarly Innovation Award for his proposal “Exploring Teacher Identity Construction and Negotiation: A Longitudinal Study.”
