Renovation Logistics and Cost
Technology Utilized │ Renovation Logistics and Cost
While the flexibility of TBL allows for implementation within large lecture halls with static furniture, an optimal classroom is versatile, with mobile furniture, ample writing services, and often the integration of interactive technology. Such collaborative spaces accommodate a student-centered approach and set the stage for an active and engaging learning experience. This can be accomplished in most standard classrooms without the need for extensive renovation or integration of technology. Moreover, thoughtful furniture design and selection enables classrooms to be converted for collaborative use with little to no loss in seating capacity.
Below is a breakdown of approximate cost for a classroom that measures 35'x35' with an original seating capacity of 60. For this design, which includes minimal technology, the majority of the cost is for furniture, with additional expenses related to carpeted flooring, an additional overhead projector, and extension of whiteboards.

Additional technology items not included in the renovation cost estimates above include an in-class test scanner by Apperson to facilitate iRAT grading and twenty Nook tablets available for check-out by students to facilitate use of the Learning Catalytics student response system.
These collaborative classrooms (see before and after photos above) were designed to minimize renovation cost and optimize the learning environment for students and faculty. The table shape was chosen to increase opportunities for student interaction and casters were included on all furniture to accommodate flexibility and cross-group discussions. An additional projector was included to allow students to view slides and videos easily. Carpet was included to reduce echo and provide a more comfortable space. Even paint color was chosen carefully, with a darker accent wall in the front to reduce glare and modernize the space. Ultimately, these design features reduce distractions and help students to focus on learning and faculty on teaching.
