Criminal Justice Student Awarded Newman Civic Fellowship
Lauren Parker, a third-year UHD student in the College of Public Service, was recently awarded the the prestigious Newman Civic Fellowship. The program involves networking and academic opportunities, and recipients will convene at a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows, a partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.
UHDPD Police Cadet Program Makes History
The newly instated Police Cadet Program minted its its first group of graduates on July 15, 2024. The cadets became the first to go from UHD security guards to UHDPD police officers as police officers.
UHD Launches Wind Technician Program
University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) has launched a Wind Turbine Technician Certificate Program to address the growing global need for workers skilled in servicing, diagnosing, repairing and installing wind turbines and related equipment.

GatorCash is now accepted at the UHD snack and food vending machines, as well as the Coca-Cola vending machines. Money can be added to your GatorCard through the GatorCard Portal. Check out the Campus Store website for deals on UHD clothing, supplies and electronic equipment. Remember, UHD faculty and Staff receive a 10% discount on all purchases with a valid UHD Gator Card ID.

Dr. Anita Raychawdhuri Awarded Fellowship to Study at Folger Shakespeare Library
This summer, she's working at the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., on a short-term residential Scholarly Research Fellowship. Her proposal, "Talking Dirty: Queer Performance, Racialized Spectacle, and Empire in Early Modern English Drama," was chosen from a competitive pool of international candidates. Each proposed research project was judged on its merits in areas like quality, contribution to its respective field, and scope. Dr. Raychawdhuri's project, the judges noted in her award letter, had "exceptional merit."
Once-in-a-Lifetime: Five-Time Grammy Award Winner Victor Wooten Comes to UHD
Right before July Fourth fireworks and Hurricane Beryl barreled down on us, there was five-time Grammy Award winner Victor Wooten. He took UHD by storm, followed by a concert with his brothers that brought unparalleled musicianship and palpable joy to The Heights Theater. No surprise. Rolling Stone Magazine called him "one of the top ten bassists of all time."
Staff Spotlight: Ruby LaCour-Tyler
As a child, Ruby LaCour-Tyler, Manager of Administrative Services at UHD's Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB), recalls car rides from North Houston to the University of Houston-Downtown. LaCour-Tyler's older sibling was the "FPIC" (first person in college) and attended UHD. Years passed, and the UHD alumna's path led her back to the university.
