Program Timeline

  • February 1: Deadline for application materials at UHD. 
  • February-March: Review of the materials. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit materials in advance of the deadline! If files are incomplete, they will not be reviewed.  Students receiving offers will be asked to respond within a week of receiving the offer to accept or decline the REU internship. Student selection can take up to 4 weeks. If you have not heard from us, your file is still active and is under consideration. 
  • April-May: REU participants and mentors should communicate to discuss and plan research topics for the 8-week summer program.
  • Early June: REU participants arrive in Houston, Texas. Participants can move into housing, get settled and start to explore the city. An orientation session will start at 9:00 am on Monday, June 5.  Morning activities will include meeting mentors, a campus tour, picking up student ID cards, visiting the recreation center and library. 
  • June - July: The 8-week summer program will run from early June until the end of July or early August.  
  • End of July (last week of program): Practice and feedback on oral presentations. Exit interviews will be conducted for program evaluations.
  • Last day of program: Students will give oral presentations of their research results in the  REU mini-conference.
  • One-two days following the last day: Completion of the Summer REU Program, participants will move out of housing, and depart for home.
