The Wortham Theater, built in 1987, is located at 550 Prairie Avenue and was designed by Morris*Aubrey Architects. It was built to house the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet. Built entirely with private donations on municipal property, when completed, it was turned over to the City of Houston.

The Allen Center was named after the founders of the City of Houston, Augustus C. and John Kirby Allen. The complex is located at 500 Dallas Avenue and was begun by Dallas developer Trammell Crow. It is the only downtown office complex where streets have been closed to create a superblock. One Allen Center was built in 1972 by Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson. After Century Development Corporation took over Crow's interest in Allen Center, the architectural firm of Lloyd Jones Brewer & Associates designed Two (1977) and Three (1980) Allen Center and the Hotel Meridian (1980, now the Doubletree Hotel.) You can see the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the background with its round, rotating cocktail lounge on top and in the foreground the bronze sculpture Spirit of the Confederacy in Sam Houston Park.

This painting is based upon Boshier's own experience of viewing an exhibition of work by artist Dan Flavin. The naked figure represents that artist (us) as participants in this painting. Is the figure wearing a party hat or dunces cap?

Boshier came to Houston in the fall of 1980 with a one year appointment to teach painting as a visiting artist in the University of Houston's Department of Art. He stayed for 13 years. During those Texas years the artist returned once again to painting. He explored through the paint medium many subjects including the Texas cowboy mythology, pop culture and modern life, and the relationships between art and politics.
