UHD pulled out all the stops to celebrate five decades of educational excellence at its 50th Anniversary Gala, held at the Hilton Americas-Houston on Saturday, October 12, 2024, and emceed by retired KPRC 2 meteorologist and show host Khambrel Marshall. The gala was more than just a celebration—it was a tribute to the university’s legacy and a launchpad for its future. Nearly $300,000 was raised at the event to support scholarships, helping future generations of Gators achieve their academic dreams.
As is usually the case, UHD students stole the show. During the black-tie event (complete with a silent auction, wine pull, comedian Chinedu Ogu, dinner, and dancing), Angie Monterosso, a recipient of the Ted Bauer Undergraduate Business Scholarship, and Precious Meneru, a UHD Scholars Academy member, shared their stories from the podium. As they underscored the life-changing impact of UHD scholarships, the two students’ authenticity and grace awed the partygoers as everyone leaned in to listen and be inspired.
The UHD Concert Chorale opened the evening with a beautiful rendition of “America the Beautiful,” conducted by Professor Orlando Williams, and students also capped the evening with a surprise “flash mob,” featuring an amazing breakdance solo by UHD alum and Marilyn Davies College of Business staffer Ricardo Saint-Surin. They brought such joy to the evening that soon everyone was on their feet, dancing to the music of the David Caceres Band.
During dinner, President Loren J. Blanchard said, "Tonight, we honor the past while embracing the boundless possibilities of the future. Fifty years ago, UHD began as a modest, one-building college. Today, we celebrate its incredible growth and the spirit of innovation, perseverance, and heart that has defined our journey." With a spirit of gratitude, President Blanchard recognized the university's past leaders, including UHD’s first interim president, Dr. W.I. Dykes, and other trailblazing presidents who have paved the way for today’s thriving institution.
A number of awards were given throughout the evening, including the Excellence in Leadership Award. Marilyn Davies was the recipient, and, going forward, the award will be named in her honor into perpetuity: the Marilyn Davies Excellence in Leadership Award. The 2024 Corporate Partner of the Year Award went to Voya Financial.
UHD took the opportunity to honor its remarkable alumni, celebrating their contributions to both their fields and the broader community. Among the honorees were:
- Aubrey McKenzie Jones, recipient of the Alum On The Rise Award, recognized for her outstanding work in human sciences and workforce development, helping individuals with disabilities achieve independence.
- Krisshundria James, who received the Alum Entrepreneur Award. She was praised for her success as CEO and founder of Blossom Up, LLC, where she empowers young women to thrive in the face of adversity.
- Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, honored with the Golden Gator Award and is a distinguished UHD graduate who has served the Houston community with dedication and grace, from his early days as a peace officer to his leadership as Sheriff of Harris County.
- Liza Alonzo, celebrated for over two decades of leadership at UHD. She was acknowledged for her unwavering commitment to the university’s mission.
Additionally, the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award was bestowed upon:
- Chinaecherem Eze Coleman, a 2021 graduate and data science prodigy, who founded a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young adults while promoting mental health awareness.
- Roy L. Jackson Sr., a renowned jazz saxophonist whose musical talents have earned him accolades in the global jazz community.
- Laura Dupree, an educator dedicated to inspiring future generations of teachers, with numerous awards under her belt for her outstanding contributions to education.
The celebration shone brightly, thanks to the generosity of the 50th Anniversary Gala’s Lead Sponsor, Marilyn Davies, and Gold Sponsors such as Ed Hugetz, Piping Technology & Products, Inc., and others including Silver Sponsor, Voya Financial.
The evening was not only a reflection of UHD’s rich history but also a forward-looking beacon of hope and ambition. Special guests included University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator, prominent university presidents, and many other distinguished community leaders, all joining in this momentous occasion.
The gala was a jubilant expression of pride, community, and a bright future for the next generation of Gators! Here’s to the next 50 years of student success at UHD.
