As one of 600 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) from across the nation, UHD joins in this week’s celebration of National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week from Sept. 9-15. The observance takes place right before National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
HSIs are defined as having 25% or more undergraduate Hispanic students full-time equivalent enrollment. In 2022-23, 600 institutions met the definition of an HSI. They enrolled 66.2% of all Hispanic undergraduates and 31.7% of all undergraduate students in nonprofit postsecondary education. HSIs play an important role in improving access to education for traditionally underserved students.
UHD’s enrollment numbers way exceed the 25% or more undergraduate Hispanic requirement to be considered an HIS. In fact, 57% of UHD’s student body is Hispanic, according to fall 2023 enrollment numbers.
