UHD's "official" 50th birthday was Aug. 6, 2024, but that hasn't stopped us from continuing the university's 50th anniversary celebration until the end of 2024! Even Houston Mayor John Whitmire and City Council joined in the act on congratulating UHD on its first 50 years and prophesizing that the best is yet to come.
On Aug. 20, UHD was well represented at City Hall when Council Member Mario Castillo presented President Loren J. Blanchard with a special proclamation in recognition of UHD's 50th anniversary, highlighting our rich history, impact on the larger community, and our significant ties with downtown Houston.
Mayor Whitmire commented that UHD used to be known as one of Houston's best kept secrets, but under Dr. Blanchard's able leadership, that is no longer the case. "It has arrived," said the mayor as he noted UHD's transformational impact, especially for first-generation college students. Council Member Tiffany Thomas shared that a family member attends UHD, and she has been so impressed with all the opportunities afforded UHD students, namely the Study Abroad program.
