Freshman Scholarships
Completion of your Admissions application and formal acceptance as a University of Houston-Downtown student is required to be considered for a UHD Freshman Scholarship. You must meet the following requirements to be considered for a UHD Freshman Scholarship:
- Apply for admission to UHD. Early completion of the admissions process is highly recommended.
- Early high school transcripts and college dual credit transcripts must be received by January will be given priority for scholarhsip consideration for the following fall semester start. Early high school transcripts are based on your academic progress through December. Official transcript(s) should also be submitted to the Admissions Office, once they become available in early spring.
- Merit based scholarship awards are based on your high school academic record; based on a 4-point scale and enrollment of 12 or more hours; minimum GPA is 2.7. Scholarship candidates with the highest ranking will be given priority.
The approved freshman scholarship candidates will be notified by mail. The scholarship agreement letter acknowledging student’s acceptance must be submitted by the deadline date indicated.
Renewable UHD Freshman scholarships are identified through the description and eligibility criteria listed below. These may be renewable up to 8 semesters during the Fall and Spring terms, if renewable criteria are met each year. Your UHD GPA will be reviewed at the end of each academic year. Failure to meet the requirements outlined in the scholarship description will result in the cancellation of the scholarship for future semesters. Once cancelled, the scholarship cannot be re-instated. Developmental coursework does not count towards the 12 college credit hours required to maintain scholarships.
New Freshman Student Scholarships 2025/2026
- New students who are Pell eligible (Freshmen) or SAT score below national mean (for Freshmen)
- FAFSA completion required
- Not available for Graduate or International students
- Non-refundable (towards billable tuition and fee charges/true costs only)
- Annualized award, Fall Spring only, full-time enrollment up to 15 credit hours per term
- Need to maintain 2.0 cum GPA for first semester to continue eligibility for the second semester
- Need to be registered for courses to be eligible for disbursement

The Admissions and Financial Aid office will review the credentials of admitted students who have a completed FAFSA and make the offer for the scholarships, based on fund availability.
- Scholarship will be in addition to any other federal, state or institutional grants or scholarships received at University of Houston-Downtown.
- Students can apply for the scholarship without completing a FAFSA
- For new full-time, first-time-in-college students beginning in a fall semester only.
- 3.5 or higher GPA or Class Rank must be within the top 16%-25% and SAT 1080/ACT 21 or higher.
- Completed at least 5 dual credit courses through Lone Star College system while in high school.
- Students must apply for admission to University of Houston-Downtown and submit their high school transcript by April 24, 2025
- Students who are pre-screened for the eligibility criteria above are asked to complete an interest form
- Notified students must accept the scholarship award and attend the UHD Downtown Bound event on April 26, 2025
- Minimum 2.7 high school GPA based on a 4 point scale
- Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be a New Freshman entering for the Fall term
- Graduated from high school within last two years
- Must enroll in 12 or more UHD college credit hours each semester
- Transcript submission required for Admission acceptance
- May be renewable, if renewal criteria are met each semester.
- Minimum 2.7 GPA based on a 4 point scale
- Must be a New Freshman entering for the Fall term
- Graduated from high school within last two years
