and present. Recognized globally as one of jazz’s most esteemed trumpeters, Blanchard
defies expectations, creating music that spans film, television, opera, Broadway,
and beyond.

You Might Have Heard...
Terence Blanchard is a renowned composer and trumpeter whose work spans film, television,
and opera, often addressing themes of social justice and racial inequality. His long-standing
collaboration with director Spike Lee has resulted in over 20 film scores, including
BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods, both of which earned him Oscar nominations. Blanchard's
scores have become integral to films like One Night in Miami, The Woman King, and
Eve’s Bayou, while his contributions to series such as Perry Mason and Apple TV’s
They Call Me Magic demonstrate his versatility. Through his compositions, Blanchard
weaves deeply emotional and human stories with melodies that enhance the impact of
these narratives.
In addition to his film work, Blanchard has made significant contributions to the
world of opera. His groundbreaking opera Fire Shut Up in My Bones premiered at the
Metropolitan Opera in 2021, marking the first time an African American composer's
work had been featured at the Met in its 138-year history. This was followed by his
opera Champion, which premiered at the Met in 2023 to critical acclaim. Blanchard's
operas, along with his jazz roots, continue to serve as a powerful medium for exploring
civil rights, human struggle, and identity, solidifying his place as one of today's
most innovative and influential composers.
